Frequently Asked Questions
My internet connection has gone off, what can I do?
The first thing to try is restarting your router; this solves 90% of internet connectivity problems. The router is normally a small box given to you by you Internet Service Provider (ISP) and will be connected to your phone line. Restarting it can be done by simply unplugging it from the mains leaving it for 1 minute and plugging it back in.
It should take a couple of minutes to reconnect and you can then try your internet connection again. If you are still having problems you should check the DSL light on the router is on, if not it could be a problem at your ISPs end and you should call the technical support line.
I am worried my PC is infected with Spyware or a Virus, what can I do?
We advise you run a scan with a piece of software called MalwareBytes and run an antivirus scan using your normal anti-virus software. If you don't have any Anti-Virus software you can use AVG Free for home users or for business users please contact DataCare (as an AVG Silver Reseller) for special rates on AVG Network Edition.
MalwareBytes should remove all traces of Spyware and will probably need to restart to PC to ensure everything is completely gone.
If you are still having problems then try running MalwareBytes and SpyBot Search and Destroy software in Windows safe mode. These is normally accessed by repeatedly pressing F8 as your computer boots up and choosing either Windows Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking from the menu.
My PC won't start Windows, I get a blue STOP screen or my PC restarts itself, how can I fix this?
This problem can sometimes be rectified in two ways; however it can sometimes be a sign of hard drive failure and if it occurs regularly a replacement hard disk may be required.
Both solutions require a Windows CD, you should have got this when you bought your PC. Insert the CD into your CD/DVD drive and restart the PC. Instead of booting to Windows it will boot from the, this will take around 5 minutes until you are presented with a menu.
One option is to use the Recovery Console which gives you a Prompt allowing you to type commands. If you type "chkdsk C: /p /r" this will run a disk scan and attempt to fix any errors found on the hard disk. It may take up to 20 minutes for this check to complete. Once this is done type "exit" to reboot the PC and see if Windows boots up.
The second option is a Windows Repair, for this you also need to boot from the Windows XP CD, Press Enter on the menu for "Setup Windows XP Now" and accept the license agreement. The setup will then search for existing Windows XP installations, it should fine you install and let you press R to repair Windows. This will go through the Windows installation asking for language settings and your license key. Once this is complete Windows should be repaired with all your installed programs and files intact.
I can't find where I saved a file? How can I search for it?
Windows has a search option which can search through all files and folders on your PC to find a file. To open the search file option press the Windows Key and F or click Search from the start men. You can search for a file by name, type, date last modified and size. You can also type in part of the name or choose enter text in the "Containing Text" box to search for text within a Word file.
My printer won't print.
If you printer has a USB connection make sure the cable is plugged into the printer and the PC. If you click Start, Control Panel and choose printers check to see if the printer is listed as Offline. If it does not say offline then the printer should be correctly connected to the PC. Error codes are included on most printers either shown on a screen on the printer or by various patterns of flashing lights on the printer. Referring to the manual of the printer will show what these codes indicate, for example a common problem would be a paper jam and once this is cleared the printer will print again without further issues.
